We are members of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) The Freedom Cowboy Therapeutic Riding Program has a dedicated staff and volunteers that want to see our youth and adult riders shine and get stronger mentally and physically. In therapeutic riding, the walking movement of the horse is similar to the movement of a person walking. When people ride a horse, their hips move as if they were walking on their own. The riders gain muscle strength, balance and their brain receives signals just as if they were walking themselves. The warmth of the horse helps riders relax and loosens up their muscles. The horse also gives the rider a huge jump to freedom as they can go where they want without the restrictions their body puts upon them. Currently, we have two Certified NARHA Instructors and our lessons are held on Mondays at 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. |

“A Riders Testimonial” I would like to share my experience at the BJP Youth Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Program when it was located in Gainesville, Missouri. I have Cerebral Palsy which confines me to a wheelchair most of the time. The ranch offers horseback riding for handicapped people. The ranch is handicapped accessible (They are equipped to put me on a horse for therapeutic horseback riding lessons.) The therapy I receive from riding a horse strengthens the muscles in my legs, back, neck and shoulders. It also helps me develop better balance and posture which helps me to do everyday tasks better. But most of all, I like how it makes me feel when I am on the horse. It gives me a sense of freedom. It is the closest thing to walking I have ever felt. It’s hard to explain all my feelings when I am on the horse, but my mom says my expressions say everything. All I know is that I really look forward to the days when I get to ride. I wish that everyone who has a disability would get the chance to ride a horse like I do. The experience of riding a horse gives me great joy in knowing that the people of BJP Youth Ranch and the people who contribute money and gifts to help continue the program, care enough about people with disabilities to give them a chance to do the same things as everyone else. |
